Estate Planning Hint – Transfer on Death Deeds
written by Sarah White, Estate Attorney and trusted partner
Georgia now allows Transfer on Death (TOD) deeds, enabling property owners to designate a beneficiary who will automatically inherit the property upon death. The beneficiary must file an affidavit with a death certificate within nine months to officially take ownership without probate. If this isn’t done, the property reverts to the estate.
TOD deeds may not be suitable for all clients, particularly those with minor children, or those needing restrictions on property ownership. They’re also unnecessary for clients with revocable trusts. While TOD deeds can simplify the transfer of real estate, they don’t replace the need for a will, which should still be in place as a backup. If you want more details, please reach out to your advisor or connect with your estate attorney.

They discuss their “world domination” planning sessions, which cover aspects like finances, fitness, faith, and fun, with a humorous twist on procrastination and reducing stress. The conversation also touches on the importance of setting realistic goals, tracking progress, and maintaining connections within the family. The episode ends with a reflection on gratitude, highlighting the joys of travel, work, and time spent with loved ones.

Fall Weeknight Pasta Dish
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 4 ounces guanciale (or thick-cut bacon or pancetta, if you can’t find guanciale), cut into 1/2-inch dice
- 8 ounces butternut squash, cut into 1/2-inch dice
- 1 bunch Tuscan kale, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1/2 pound orecchiette
- Freshly grated Pecorino Romano, to taste
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Directions
- While the oven is preheating at 400°F, cut up the guanciale/pancetta and butternut squash. Toss them onto a sheet pan, drizzle with olive oil, smoosh them around a little, and roast for 30 minutes. At this point, take the sheet pan out, stir in the kale, and place it back into the oven to roast for another 10 minutes.
- Meanwhile, bring a pot of generously salted water to a boil and cook the orecchiette according to the box’s instructions, usually 9 to 11 minutes or al dente. Drain and add back to the pot. Tip the contents of the sheet pan into the pasta pot and toss with the Pecorino Romano. Salt and pepper to taste.
